At the beginning of the month the mills lowered their prices. According to the bvse, the reduction was between EUR 20 and 40 per tonne depending on the particular mill and the price achieved in the previous month.

In the East the price reduction was at the lower end of the scale and in the South and South West towards the upper end. Another buying spree from the Turkish mills in the latter half of June caused some mills to reduce the price markdown and as a result prices, on the whole, were similar to those achieved in April.

Market participants estimated the mills’ capacity utilization to be around 50%. This appeared to be a slight improvement compared to May, although in the Ruhr area, for example, mills showed little or no demand. Those mills working at full capacity had no problem in securing enough scrap and they also achieved the largest markdowns. According to the trade, the order-oriented purchasing behavior of mills running under full capacity has led to low stock levels in these mills.
