Riga - „2009 has brought many positive changes in the sector of environmental protection,” Latvian minister of the Environment Raimonds Vejonis has emphasized. „Therefore we would like to informç the society about the main achivements ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Latvia has had this year.”

Among others, in February 2009 the hazardous waste site in Zebrene, Dobele region was opened. It is the first and only hazardous waste disposal site in Latvia. This site has been created with the support of the EU Cohesion Fund in the Project „Creating hazardous waste management system in Latvia, Round 1”. Starting from February hazardous waste from all Latvian households and companies as well as waste from temporary depots (which correspond with criteria) had been transported to new Zebrene hazardous waste disposal site.

Besides that, the implementation of 150 projects of Europe Regional development fund 2004-2006 planning year was finished. Within this activity 128 water management systems have been reconstructed and 47 dump sites recultivated. In 2009 75 project applications had been evaluated and accepted for improving water management for infrastructure development in settlements with population under 2000. Total amount of financing for these projects already stands for 33 percent of all fund financing for this planning period.

The programs have been implemented in activities for developing the water management infrastructure in agglomerations with population up to 2000, development of regional waste management systems and recultivation of dump sites which don’t correspond with requirements of regulations.
