Ljubljana - In 2008, Slovenia generated 5,904,332 tons of waste. This means two percent less waste from production and service activities than in the previous year. In 2008, Slovenia recovered about 69 percent of all generated and imported waste.

The greatest share in the total amount of waste was generated by manufacturing (31 percent), then in construction (29 percent) followed by the activity of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (26 percent). The rest 14 percent was generated by other activities. In 2008, 40 percent of waste was either internally recovered or internally disposed, 54 percent of waste was delivered to the others in Slovenia for recovery or disposal and the rest six percent of waste was temporarily stored (four percent of all waste) or exported (two percent of all waste).

In 2008, 143,695 tons of hazardous waste was generated, which is four percent more than in 2007. Of the total amount of hazardous waste generated, together with the stored hazardous waste from the previous year, 116,152 tons (77 percent) was delivered to the others in Slovenia for recovery or disposal and 14,057 tonnes (9 percent) was exported abroad. The rest of the hazardous waste, 20,707 tons (14 percent), was internally recovered or disposed or temporarily placed in storage within the firm.

In 2008, 21 percent more waste was recovered than in 2007. The amounts of disposed waste were 25 percent lower than year before. The export of waste also increased by 16 percent over the previous year.
