Bunbury - A new WRAP report 'Waste arisings in the supply of food and drink to households in the UK' identifies manufacturing and households as responsible for more than 90 percent of the food, drink and packaging waste in the supply chain. Research puts the costs associated with waste generated within the UK food and drink supply chain, and households, at an estimated Euro 18.9 billion per year (Euro 13.3 billion household and Euro 5.5 billion supply chain).

Overall waste is 18.4 million tonnes per year (mt/y), of which 11.9 mt is household and 7.5 mt supply chain related. Reducing waste would provide significant financial and environmental benefits and improve resource efficiency.

The research was based around four areas:

* Manufacturing: manufacturers of food and drink products for UK consumption - product and packaging waste.
* Distribution: national and regional distribution centres, wholesalers - product and packaging waste.
* Retail: supermarkets, convenience stores, traditional retailers - product and packaging waste.
* Household: food, drink and packaging waste.

The study does include food, drink and packaging waste associated with food and drink consumed by UK households. The intention was to assess this waste in relation to that generated in the supply chain. WRAP’s household food waste research formed the primary data source for this element of the work. All other household wastes such as garden (non-food related) and construction wastes, electrical and electronic products, and textiles were excluded, as they do not fall within the scope of the UK food and drink supply chain.
