London - Defra has published provisional estimates from the Department’s survey of municipal waste in England, incorporating the third quarter of the 2009/10 financial year (October to December 2009).

Total municipal waste decreased by 0.58 million tonnes in the year to end December 2009, decreasing from 27.34 million tonnes to 26.76 million tonnes, or 2.1 percent. A decrease in total household waste was observed, from 24.3 to 23.8 million tonnes, or 2.2 percent. Less waste was sent to landfill, decreasing by 7.5 percent from 13.8 to 12.7 million tonnes.

There was an increase in the household recycling rate, from the average rate of 37.6 percent between April 2008 and March 2009 to 39.3 percent between January and December 2009. The average residual household waste (which is the amount of household waste which is not recycled) decreased from 295 kg per head between April 2008 and March 2009 to 281 kg per head between January and December 2009.
