Lisbon - In Portugal 470 kg of municipal waste per capita and year was generated between 2004 and 2009. In 2008 the recycling rate was 12 percent, taking in account that in Europe this rate was 17 percent.

Paper and cardboard are the primary material placed for recycling.
In the same period, Portugal has generated about 172 million tons of waste from business of which about 11 percent were hazardous. Manufacturing industry, commerce and services contributed about two thirds of the total generated waste from business.
The waste recovery promoted by manager’s entities of specific flows between 2004 and 2009 raised about 6 million tonnes, with an average annual growth of 18 percent. The main materials were recycled packages and old vehicles. Quelle: Instituto Nacional De Estatistica
