Ljubljana - Few days ago, the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia published a new report on "The sustainable development indicators for Slovenia". Concerning natural resources, the paper offeres some information on municipal and food waste generation.

* During the 2002-2008 period the amount of municipal waste increased - except in 2004 when it decreased by 0.1 percent.
* In 2008, over 900,000 tonnes of municipal waste (or 453 kg per capita) were generated, which was over 4 percent more than in the previous year and over 14 percent more than in 2002.
* The municipal waste generation between 2002 and 2008 increased from 812.000 to 923.000 tons.
* Compared to the base year 2002, the amounts of biodegradable kitchen waste,
edible oils and grease increased considerably. In 2008, almost 33,000 tonnes of food waste were generated, which was almost 55 percent more than in 2007 and 6-times more than in 2002. In 2008, food waste represented 4 percent of all municipal waste.
