Cardiff - Wales has reduced the amount of biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) sent to landfill by 39 percent over the last five full years of the Landfill Allowances Scheme.

All 22 Local Authorities in Wales achieved their 2009/10 allowance obligations. Overall, Welsh Local Authorities sent 523,035 tonnes of BMW to landfill compared to the 2009-10 Wales allowance of 710,000 tonnes, this is 26 percent less than the allowance. This clearly demonstrates that the Local Authorities actions to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste sent to landfill are succeeding.

Looking at individual Local Authority performance for 2009-10, Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Carmarthenshire, Denbighshire, Isle of Anglesey, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea used less than 70 percent of their allowances.

Two Local Authorities, Rhondda Cynon Taff and Vale of Glamorgan, used over 90 percent of their allowance. They have the least headroom to meet LAS targets for the coming years.
